This is an excellent website to locate specific breed rescue groups. I found it this morning hunting up a dachshund rescue organization in Virginia. I stopped my vet from taking this pup to the local shelter just in a nick of time. Really, why take a pure breed to a shelter when it will get much more support from its breed lovin' family?

The two women looked at each other, shook their heads and laughed.

'You never know when we will get more dogs. Unfortunately, there's

Over the next few days both Mom and Dad had long conversations with

Danielle walked slowly from cage to cage, kneeling periodically to

One by one she said, 'Sorry, but you're not the one.'

It was the last cage on this last day in search of the perfect pup.

The volunteer opened the cage door and the child carefully picked up
The dog and held it closely. This time she took a little longer.

'Mom, that's it! I found the right puppy! He's the one! I know it!'
She screamed with joy. 'It's the puppy size!'

'But it's the same size as all the other puppies you held over the

'No not size... The sighs. When I held him in my arms, he sighed,' she Said.

'Don't you remember? When I asked you one day what love is, you told
Me love depends on the sighs of your heart.The more you love, the

The two women looked at each other for a moment. Mom didn't know
Whether to laugh or cry. As she stooped down to hug the child, she did A little of both.

'Mom, every time you hold me, I sigh. When you and Daddy come home
From work and hug each other, you both sigh. I knew I would find the
Right puppy if it sighed when I held it in my arms,' she said.

Then, holding the puppy up close to her face, she said, 'Mom, he loves Me. I heard the sighs of his heart!'

A VERY SPECIAL DOG STORY.

Anyone who has pets will love this story. If you don't have that special companion you may just decide to bring home some love - NOW!

Mary and her husband Jim had a dog named 'Lucky.' Lucky was a Real character. Whenever Mary and Jim had company come for a weekend visit They would warn their friends to not leave their luggage open because Lucky would help himself to whatever struck his fancy. Inevitably, Someone would forget and something would come up missing.

Mary or Jim would go to Lucky's toy box in the basement and there The treasure would be, amid all of Lucky's other favorite toys. Lucky Always stashed his finds in his toy box and he was very particular that his Toys stay in the box.

It happened that Mary found out she had breast cancer. Something told Her she was going to die of this disease....in fact , she was just Sure it was fatal.

She scheduled the double mastectomy, fear riding her shoulders. The Night before she was to go to the hospital she cuddled with Lucky. A thought struck her...what would happen to Lucky? Although the Three-year-old dog liked Jim, he was Mary's dog through and Through. If I die, Lucky will be abandoned, Mary thought. He won't understand That I didn't want to leave him. The thought made her sadder than thinking of her own death.

The double mastectomy was harder on Mary than her doctors had Anticipated and Mary was hospitalized for over two weeks. Jim took Lucky for his evening walk faithfully, but the little dog just drooped, Whining and miserable.

Finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When she arrived Home, Mary was so exhausted she couldn't even make it up the steps To her bedroom. Jim made his wife comfortable on the couch and left her to nap. Lucky stood watching Mary but he didn't come to her when she called. It made Mary sad but sleep soon overcame her and she dozed.

When Mary woke for a second she couldn't understand what was wrong. She couldn't move her head and her body felt heavy and hot. But Panic soon gave way to laughter when Mary realized the problem. She was Covered, literally blanketed, with every treasure Lucky owned! While She had slept, the sorrowing dog had made trip after trip to the Basement bringing his beloved mistress all his favorite things in life.

He had covered her with his love.

Mary forgot about dying. Instead she and Lucky began living again, Walking further and further together every day. It's been 12 years Now and Mary is still cancer-free. Lucky? He still steals treasures And stashes them in his toy box but Mary remains his greatest treasure.

Remember....live every day to the fullest. Each minute is a blessing From God. And never forget....the people who make a difference in our Lives are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or The most awards. They are the ones that care for us.

Dear Dogs and Cats,

The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food..
The other dishes are mine and contain my food.
Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate does not stake a claim for it, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.
The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack.
Beating me to the bottom is not the object.
Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.
I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this.
Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort.
Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep.
It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible.
I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.
For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom.
If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get y our paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered.
Also, I have been using the bathroom for years --canine or feline attendance is not required.
The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough!

To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following message on our front door:

To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit & Like to Complain About Our Pets:
1. They live here. You don't.
2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture.
(That's why they call it 'fur'niture.)
3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
4. To you, it's an animal. To me, they are adopted children who are short,
hairy, walk on all fours and don't speak clearly.

Remember: Dogs and cats are better than kids because they:
1. Eat less
2. Don't ask for money all the time
3 Are easier to train
4. Normally come when called
5. Never ask to drive the car
6. Don't hang out with drug-using friends
7. Don't smoke or drink
8. Don't have to buy the latest fashions
9. Don't want to wear your clothes
10. Don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and...
11. If they get pregnant, you can sell their children. (But let's not go there - Spay! Neuter!)

Fundraiser Idea for Bakesales. Thanks to Melissa Felts of SPCA Fredericksburg!

I'm always trying to find something different for fundraising ideas, and I made these picture cupcakes today, just to see if they would be bakesale worthy. I think they are! I took the photos of the animals for adoption from our website (SPCAFred.org), and printed them on white paper. Then I took the paper to the bakery dept. at Giant (the machine at Simply Sweet was not working) and they printed it for me on edible paper. When I called them, they said it was $9.99 per sheet, but when I went there, it turned out to be $6.00. Then I frosted the cupcakes, cut out the pics, peeled off the backing, and stuck them on the cupcakes. Then I simply did a quick trim around them to cover the edges of the pics. Cute, huh? I hope you all can use this idea for your fundraising efforts, too!

There's not a dry eye in the house ...

Last weekend I read Mark Levin's book, Rescuing Sprite. I knew it would be a total tear jerker but I didn't know that I would be teared up from the minute I looked at the cover till I closed the back cover and all over each page in between.

Now, I had different kinds of tears from empathy to joy. I was teared up for Mark, I teared up being reminded about my past loves Candy and Champ and Molly and Vertigo and Angel.

I teared up thinking about Velvet and Bitsey our 12 year old Christmas pups. And their lil sis Hunter and Coco the barbarian, too.

From the minute you bring a pup home the clock starts ticking. Does this make us love them more intensly? I wonder. But I wouldn't have it any other way ...

Someone told me once that the greatest sign of love and thanks we can give to the loves we've lost is to love again. That is what I have been doing which is why there is a long string of dog names. Live long enough, love enough and you will have your own. (You probably do already, eh?)

Was just visiting Cesar Millan's website and saw that he has a new DVD out called "Your New Dog: The First Day and Beyond."

I love his work. It works when I work it. Imagine that.

A couple weeks ago I was off for a walk with Jacky and Velvet and decided that NO-MATTER-WHAT I would walk with them according to Cesar's Way. Although I am a Dog Whisperer junkie I haven't been walking his walk. I've been excusing me and my pups.

Jacky's excuses include: He's a Jack Russell Terrier. Oh course he is hyper. I have to let him run all over the place to burn off the extra energy. He's this way because I don't have a fenced backyard for him to run around in. He's just visiting for a couple days. I can't change anything.

Velvet's excuses ... She's getting old, just let her be. She's been this way for 11 years - can't teach an old dog new tricks. She doesn't pull or jerk THAT much ...

My excuses ... too many to list!

Anyway, on that fateful day I wrapped each leash around my hand so they had to walk at my heels. I pulled my shoulders back, held my head high, keep my focus on where I was walking and relaxed - relaxed - relaxed.

Velvet did o.k. Jacky pulled and whined and squealed and struggled for most of the 45 minute walk. I kept my focus on breathing, relaxing and moving forward. The next day we were out walking for awhile before I noticed my miracle. Jacky's leash was relaxed and he was trotting by my side. SWEET!

... tears in my eyes. It is an awesome feeling to be a pack leader. Even better is the joy I felt at seeing Jacky happy and relaxed vs. anxious, unhappy and straining.

You know how they say that a dog is "man's best friend?" Well, we (starting with me) have to learn, grow and be their best friend.

Final note. Last week I showed Jacky's mom how easy it is to walk Jacky the Cesar way.

I have a word problem to figure out and it is a doozy. Remember the ones with two cars driving from here to there - one is going 50 miles and hour, the other 55 - how many hours will it take ...

Before I give you the problem, actually it is a dream, here are the facts.

1. 6-8 million cats and dogs enter shelters each year.
2. 3-4 million cats and dogs are euthanized by shelters each year.
3. 3-4 million cats and dogs are adopted from shelters each year.
4. There are approximately 6.5 million owned dogs in the U.S.
5. Most owners (65%) own one dog.
6. Eighteen percent of owned dogs were adopted from an animal shelter.
7. Seventy-two percent of owned dogs are spayed or neutered.
8. Average number of pups one fertile dog can produce in one year is 16.
9. There are approximately 77.6 million owned cats in the U.S.
10. 51% of cat-owning households own one cat; the remaining own two or more.
11. Average number of kittens one fertile cat can product in one year is 15.
12. Each day 10,000 humans are born in the U.S. and each day 70,000 puppies and kittens are born. As long as these birth rates exist, there will never be enough homes for all the animals. (Spay USA)

Now, that's the problem. I would Love to end up with a graph showing movement towards solutions. Please help me if you can ...

If we lowered the birthrate by 2%, 5%, 10% ...

If we converted 2%, 5%, 10% of the single dog and single cat owners into adding just one more ...

If we increased the percentage of spay/neutered households by 2%, 5%, by 10%

And, what if the number of dogs going into shelters was reduced by 2%, 5%, 10%?

How would the above tweaks to our present situation affect the "entering shelters" figure? How would that affect other figures?

*Note: About reducing "the # of dogs going into shelters." Many of the dogs I meet at my SPCA are in the 1-3 year age group. They lack manners, can be difficult to walk etc.

According to SPAUSA.org "Behavior Problems" is one of the Top 5 reasons dogs are returned to shelters. I assume their owners don't know what to do and feel overwhelmed by their dog. (I am not excusing this human behavior, just being factual.) It seems logical that increased owner education via teachers such as Caesar Milan "The Dog Whisperer," group classes like those offered by PetCO etc. could affect those numbers.

Dog Walking Log - Stepping Out For The SPCA

Last Wednesday I bought a pedometer to start logging my steps for the SPCA. (I am a volunteer dog walker - you could be too. Click here for typical volunteer opportunities at your local shelter OR to help out at ours.)

Anywhuuu on Wednesday, January 2ND I walked 9533 steps. Someday I'll figure out how that translates into miles. Right now I like the sound of steps! (BTW, the manual that came with my pedometer recommends that we walk a total of 10,000 steps a day.)

January 9 = 9880 Steps (Easily 10,000 steps for that day counting walking my Velvet and being up and about!)

January 16 = OPPs. Forgot my pedometer. Had a great walk just the same!

January 23 = 7879 - down a little. Didn't have as much time and just felt like taking it easier today. Listened to my body talk ...

January 30 = 9960. Wuu Huu!

February 6 = 0. Out sick with the flu. Boo hoo.

By the way - I just determined that my average day which includes two 1/2 hour or so walks with my pup Velvet plus an errand or two plus sitting at my computer, making dinner etc. brings me in around 4900 steps. That is a lot less than I expected it to be ... I think I'll keep up my SPCA rendezvous!

February 13 = 9578 . Now this plus the above "norm" of 4900 puts me well above the 10,000 Step goal at least one day a week! (And I made a bunch of cool new friends yesterday! The pups have really been moving out quickly into GREAT homes. That makes my day just thinking about it.)

February 20 = 7069. I did more petting and connecting and brushing this week than vigorous walking. Also, I'd been to the dentist and had 3 teeth worked on ... This is not a competition and some days I need to take it easy. The fresh air and company did wonders for me!

An old, tired-looking dog wandered into the yard. I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home. He followed me into the house, down the hall, and fell asleep in a corner.

An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out.
The next day he was back, resumed his position in the hall, and slept for an hour. This continued for several weeks.

Curious, I pinned a note to his collar: "Every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap."

The next day he arrived with a different note pinned to his collar: "He lives in a home with ten children -- he's trying to catch up on his sleep. Can I come with him tomorrow?"

Salty Dogs by Jean M. Fogle ...

Yesterday I came home from walking Charlotte and Precious and Lil Buddy and Maggie and Mystic and ... all SPCA pups in need of a loving home for the holidays and beyond ...

Time with these dogs never fails to re-energize me but I have to tell you it was a little bittersweet to be in a shelter filled to brim with dogs and cats and not enough hands and hearts.

There wasn't more to be done in that moment except give my heart a hug. I did that with a delightful photo and inspirational quote book called Salty Dogs! It is full of dogs being dogs at one of my favorite places on earth - the beach. It is full of dogs playing with each other and with people who love them. Just looking at the sun filled, joy filled pages warmed up my cold winter evening.

Can't share the photos here - sorry. But I can share a couple of my favorite quotes:

Flying Dogs of Ocean Beach

Over the years, there have been rumored sightings of flying dogs at Dog Beach in San Diego. These sighting were attributed to late night shadows, beach gas and excessive alcohol consumption of the semi-conscious witnesses. Dogs cannot fly. Except in airplanes. I made a new friend at the park yesterday. His name is Charlie. Charlie was the name of Candy's mate. Candy was my first dog and, another standard poodle. I was five years old when she was carried through our door.

It amazes me how I can remember the name of her mate and I can't remember things like the names of my senators, the dates of World Wars, the names of all the presidents ...

Talk about selective memories. Guess I keep track of the good stuff.

Sanctuary saves its 1,000th dog

A Northern Ireland animal sanctuary has saved its 1,000th dog from being destroyed.

It is estimated 6,500 dogs are put down in Northern Ireland every year - but the County Down sanctuary rescues some of them by shipping them to England.

The Assisi Sanctuary in Conlig have now sent their 1,000th dog across the Irish Sea.

Heaven, Hell & A Dog

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stonewall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble.

At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother of pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold.

He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked. "Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up." The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.

"I'm sorry; sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road, which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

"Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any water?" "Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there" The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in."

"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog. "There should be a bowl by the pump." They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl took a long drink himself, and then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them.

"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked. "This is Heaven," was the answer.

"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too." "Oh, you mean the place with the Gold Street and Pearly Gates? Nope. That's Hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?" "No. I can see how you might think so, but we're just happy that they screen out the folks who'll leave their best friends behind."

I've spent the last two days cleaning the dog and the puppy area at the SPCA and I have two thing to say ...

One. I wish my house - any room in my house - was half as clean as that place.

Two. I am continually amazed at the quality of care, commitment of staff and volunteers and the love that the dogs, puppies, cats and kittens receive at SPCA, Fredericksburg, VA. It is an honor to be a part of it - one of the spokes in the wheel.

Do you volunteer at your SPCA? There are so many ways to help out - it's easy. I've committed to 3 hours of dog walking a week. You could do the same or ... sign up for cat petting, cleaning, helping with special events (bake sales & fund-raisers etc.)

One of my pups -- figuratively speaking -- got a great home today. I usually don't seem to meet the new "owner." I'm in one day a week so I typically notice the missing face and ask around and hear about the great home, family etc.

Last week a man wanted to adopt one of our beloved hounds, Speigle The Beagle.

He wanted to know what I thought about Speigle's leg that had been broken and healed but could be arthritic down the road.

I told him that love is a risk. We can't promise that someone will live for long or be healthy anymore than we can for a dog. But I do know that love withheld is wasted, safe but wasted.

What do you think. Should he take a chance on Speigle? Should he take a chance on Love?

Finding The Right Vet

I am now in the process of needing to find a new vet since my last one retired a few months back. I do not like his replacement and neither does my dog, Rosie.

Since I have not had to look for many years, what is the best way to find a new vet and what questions should I ask them? I only want the best for my dog.

Home alone. This drives some dogs, like my Angel, absolutely NUTS.

Here are 3 tips to help curb your pup's separation anxiety:

1. Stuff a Kong toy with dog cookies. Seal it with a thick coat of peanut butter and pass it off to them as you are heading out the door.

According to my dog trainer, keeping them busy for the first ten or so minutes after you leave is critical to helping them relax and not go into the dramatic behaviors that indicate separation anxiety -- whining, pacing, digging (Angle tried to dig her way out of my bedroom), barking, counter surfing ...

2. Be "low key" whenever you greet them in the morn, eve and in between. Do not make a fuss about your coming and goings -- in fact, don't say anything at all when you leave -- just leave. Some people -- mostly women -- go into this high pitched, excited and sympathetic voice that communicates excitement and anxiety. You know what I'm talking about ...

(According to The Dog Whisperer "alpha dogs" come and go without seeking approval or agreement. If you are alpha your pup will be relieved to follow and be a part of your pack.)

3. Add "time outs" and strategic separations into your day. Get your pup used to your coming and goings. Leave them alone in a room for a few minutes ... then five minutes ... then ten minutes ... With this technique you are basically desensitizing them and, with time and patience, eliminating separation anxiety for good.

Here is a canine intelligence test that you can try at home (or on the beach).

Now,no matter what happens we don't love 'em for their brains ... we love them for loving us so much ...

Here goes:

1. Put a treat under a can and see how long it takes them to retrieve it. (Under 15 seconds is very good.)

2. Set up 3 cans and place a treat under 1 while your pet watches. Remove him from the room for a couple minutes then bring him back in. Does he go straight to the cans and pick out the right one?

3. How many commands, hand signals and noises does your dog respond to? More that 200 means you have a "super pet." (I don't think I respond to more than 200!)

Got a notice from Banfield That Pet Hospital I told you about ... said that my bank draft hadn't gone through and I needed to get it fixed to stay in "good standing."

Fun in the Summer Sun: Health Tips from Banfield, The Pet Hospital.

1. Make sure your pet doesn't get overexerted. Exercise is important BUT don't over heat your pet. Walk in the shade when possible, walk at a gentle pace and take a break under a shady tree if you notice excessive panting, drooling, weakness or brick red gums.

2. Provide plenty of water. Keep that water bowl full in fact you may want to put down an extra bowl and leave nothing to chance.

3. Sun lotion is good for you ... and don't forget your Pets. Pets get sunburned too! (I didn't know that.) Talk to your vet or groomer about how short to cut their fur in the summer.

4. Bring your Pet inside. When the heat goes up you need to bring your pet in ... Dark pets can overheat quickly as their coats absorb the sun's rays. Pugs and bulldogs have a hard time staying cool because they can pant efficiently; Overweight pets are also more prone to overheating. Unsure what to do? Err on the safe, vs. sorry side and invite them in ...

5. Watch out for heatstroke! This is a medical emergency. Signs are: exaggerated panting; brick red gums; unresponsive to commands and surroundings; staring/anxious expression; high fever; rapid heartbeat; vomiting; collapse; warm/dry skin.

6. NEVER leave your Pet in your automobile. On an 83-degree day the temp inside your car can reach 102 degrees in ONLY 10 minutes and 120 degrees in 30 minutes. Leave your Pet home.

7. If it is too hot for you to sit in the bed of your truck it is TOO hot for your Pet. Leave 'em home where it is cooler, where there is water and comfort. Don't leave your Pet in a situation where you wouldn't put yourself or someone you Loved.

Little Jacky is coming to town ...

Velvet will have a little pal over the next 10 days ... a little Jack Russel Terrier named Jacky. FUN!

So, here's the plan. Michael and I will pick him up tomorrow afternoon then go home and immediately take a long walk with Velvet and Jacky.

Why? Because that is what The Dog Whisperer would do to form a happy and balanced pack.
