Salty Dogs by Jean M. Fogle ...

Yesterday I came home from walking Charlotte and Precious and Lil Buddy and Maggie and Mystic and ... all SPCA pups in need of a loving home for the holidays and beyond ...

Time with these dogs never fails to re-energize me but I have to tell you it was a little bittersweet to be in a shelter filled to brim with dogs and cats and not enough hands and hearts.

There wasn't more to be done in that moment except give my heart a hug. I did that with a delightful photo and inspirational quote book called Salty Dogs! It is full of dogs being dogs at one of my favorite places on earth - the beach. It is full of dogs playing with each other and with people who love them. Just looking at the sun filled, joy filled pages warmed up my cold winter evening.

Can't share the photos here - sorry. But I can share a couple of my favorite quotes:

I think we are drawn to dogs because they are the uninhibited creatures we might be if we weren't certain we knew better.
-George Bird Evans
In every real man a child is hidden that wants to play.
-Friedrich Nietzsche
All animals except man know that the ultimate in life is to enjoy it.
-Samuel Butler

For more information and to gift yourself or a friend, click on the photo below. It will take you directly into the Amazon.com order page. (I wonder who that little dog on the cover is? Jean's inspiration is Molly, her Jack Russel Terrier. Is this Molly's best friend?)

What a Dog loves is ... to be part of a pack.

Flying Dogs of Ocean Beach

Over the years, there have been rumored sightings of flying dogs at Dog Beach in San Diego. These sighting were attributed to late night shadows, beach gas and excessive alcohol consumption of the semi-conscious witnesses. Dogs cannot fly. Except in airplanes. But some recent photographs evidence has re-ignited the debate. Can dogs fly?

You be the judge. (Click here.)

Are you seeing double?

There is only one thing I can think of that is better than have a pup at home. It is having two ...

Do you have room in you heart or home for one more?

Please visit your local shelter. They may be a little or a large bundle of love waiting to meet you and your pup. (You can also bring your dog with you to see first hand how well they connect with each other.)

What A Dog Loves is ...

making new friends at the beach,
making new friends at the park,
making new friends on the walk ...

What a Dog Loves is time to make new friends and play. Then nap. Then eat something delicious. Then do it all over again!

Sounds good to me ...

I made a new friend at the park yesterday. His name is Charlie. Charlie was the name of Candy's mate. Candy was my first dog and, another standard poodle. I was five years old when she was carried through our door.

It amazes me how I can remember the name of her mate and I can't remember things like the names of my senators, the dates of World Wars, the names of all the presidents ...

Talk about selective memories. Guess I keep track of the good stuff.
Isn't he a gorgous boy?! I love poodles ...

DogsInDanger.com - "Each year over 4 million dogs are killed."
New, in-your-face website. Posts photos and information about dogs available for adoption and their countdown to euthanasia. Yes, that is the reality of the situation.

Why are some of the reasons that so many dogs are in shelters?

Top 10 reasons dogs are dumped at shelters
Moving
Landlord not allowing pet
Too many animals in household
Cost of pet maintenance
Owner having personal problems
Inadequate facilities
No homes available for litter mates
Having no time for pet
Pet illness
Biting

You know what I think is the Number 1 Reason? Birth. We need to drop the birthrate down-down-down and bring these pups home.

Please visit www.DogsInDanger.com and give them support. Make a contribution. Forward the website to a friend. Place a post in your on-line community and in your newsletter. Adopt a dog ...

One dog at a time we can make this grim statistic old news ... the way things "used" to be.

Getting ready to fly away this weekend with Velvet. I am nervous!

Went and got her health certificate, doggy tranquilizers (can I take them too?), cargo container ...

Bought her a water bottle that is like a baby bottle and spent the evening trying to teach her how to drink from it without too much success.

Well - one day at a time ... stay tuned.

Sanctuary saves its 1,000th dog

A Northern Ireland animal sanctuary has saved its 1,000th dog from being destroyed.

It is estimated 6,500 dogs are put down in Northern Ireland every year - but the County Down sanctuary rescues some of them by shipping them to England.

The Assisi Sanctuary in Conlig have now sent their 1,000th dog across the Irish Sea.

Heaven, Hell & A Dog

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stonewall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble.

At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother of pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold.

He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is Heaven, sir," the man answered.

"Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked. "Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up." The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

"Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.

"I'm sorry; sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road, which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

"Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any water?" "Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there" The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in."

"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog. "There should be a bowl by the pump." They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl took a long drink himself, and then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them.

"What do you call this place?" the traveler asked. "This is Heaven," was the answer.

"Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was Heaven, too." "Oh, you mean the place with the Gold Street and Pearly Gates? Nope. That's Hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?" "No. I can see how you might think so, but we're just happy that they screen out the folks who'll leave their best friends behind."

I've spent the last two days cleaning the dog and the puppy area at the SPCA and I have two thing to say ...

One. I wish my house - any room in my house - was half as clean as that place.

Two. I am continually amazed at the quality of care, commitment of staff and volunteers and the love that the dogs, puppies, cats and kittens receive at SPCA, Fredericksburg, VA. It is an honor to be a part of it - one of the spokes in the wheel.

Do you volunteer at your SPCA? There are so many ways to help out - it's easy. I've committed to 3 hours of dog walking a week. You could do the same or ... sign up for cat petting, cleaning, helping with special events (bake sales & fund-raisers etc.)

Why don't you give them a call today? Click here for a listing of SPCAs by city and state. Provided by http://www.PetFinder.com

I spent a couple hours in an airport last weekend and did what I love to do most ... browsed in all the bookstores. Ahhhhh.

One of them had a cool collection of dog books so I thought it would be cool to start listing them here as I think of them, or come across them, or get in timely suggestions from you - yes you!

O.k. here goes ...

Old Yeller. Every dog book collection must begin somewhere. If it didn't begin here then it would have to be with Where the Red Fern Grows.

What classic bow wow book would you add in here? Do tell. And, check back in a couple days for more ...

One of my pups -- figuratively speaking -- got a great home today. I usually don't seem to meet the new "owner." I'm in one day a week so I typically notice the missing face and ask around and hear about the great home, family etc.

Today was special. I got to say goodbye AND congratulations, to both.

This video is awesome. Finally, something about a real man who really loves his dog. Richard Stone, another real man, and my bro behind the What a Dog Loves photos and commentaries, found this and sent it over to me tonight.

Amen.

Click here for the Miracle Dog Video. Short and very, very sweet. I'll sleep well tonight.
Last week a man wanted to adopt one of our beloved hounds, Speigle The Beagle.

He wanted to know what I thought about Speigle's leg that had been broken and healed but could be arthritic down the road.

I told him that love is a risk. We can't promise that someone will live for long or be healthy anymore than we can for a dog. But I do know that love withheld is wasted, safe but wasted.

What do you think. Should he take a chance on Speigle? Should he take a chance on Love?

Finding The Right Vet
Written by Dr. Sherry Weaver

I am now in the process of needing to find a new vet since my last one retired a few months back. I do not like his replacement and neither does my dog, Rosie.

Since I have not had to look for many years, what is the best way to find a new vet and what questions should I ask them? I only want the best for my dog.

Please help. The time for her shots is fast approaching.

Thank you, Becky B.

Home alone. This drives some dogs, like my Angel, absolutely NUTS.

Here are 3 tips to help curb your pup's separation anxiety:

1. Stuff a Kong toy with dog cookies. Seal it with a thick coat of peanut butter and pass it off to them as you are heading out the door.

According to my dog trainer, keeping them busy for the first ten or so minutes after you leave is critical to helping them relax and not go into the dramatic behaviors that indicate separation anxiety -- whining, pacing, digging (Angle tried to dig her way out of my bedroom), barking, counter surfing ...

2. Be "low key" whenever you greet them in the morn, eve and in between. Do not make a fuss about your coming and goings -- in fact, don't say anything at all when you leave -- just leave. Some people -- mostly women -- go into this high pitched, excited and sympathetic voice that communicates excitement and anxiety. You know what I'm talking about ...

(According to The Dog Whisperer "alpha dogs" come and go without seeking approval or agreement. If you are alpha your pup will be relieved to follow and be a part of your pack.)

3. Add "time outs" and strategic separations into your day. Get your pup used to your coming and goings. Leave them alone in a room for a few minutes ... then five minutes ... then ten minutes ... With this technique you are basically desensitizing them and, with time and patience, eliminating separation anxiety for good.

This health tip is for you - yes - YOU!

Some 70 million Americans have trouble sleeping. If you are one of them -- one way to sleep tight is to sweat-a-lot.

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers found that people who exercised for 30 to 40 minutes, four times a week, were able to cut the time it took them to fall asleep by an average of 15 minutes.

Well - today I walked dogs for the Humane Society for 2 1/2 hours in 90 degree weather. I plan to sleep tight tonight!

The Publicity Hound has a GREAT weekly newsletter with excellent publicity tools, tips and resources. Joan also throws in "Hound Joke of the Week." Enjoy ...

Dogs are better than kids. They eat less, don't ask for money all the time, are trained, usually come when called, never drive your car, don't hang out with drug-using friends, don't smoke or drink, don't worry about whether they have the latest fashions, don't wear your clothes and don't need a gazillion dollars for college. And if they get pregnant, you can sell the pups.

Here is a canine intelligence test that you can try at home (or on the beach).

Now,no matter what happens we don't love 'em for their brains ... we love them for loving us so much ...

Here goes:

1. Put a treat under a can and see how long it takes them to retrieve it. (Under 15 seconds is very good.)

2. Set up 3 cans and place a treat under 1 while your pet watches. Remove him from the room for a couple minutes then bring him back in. Does he go straight to the cans and pick out the right one?

3. How many commands, hand signals and noises does your dog respond to? More that 200 means you have a "super pet." (I don't think I respond to more than 200!)

- This test was developed by researches Stanley Coren, PhD, at the University of British Columbia.

Got a notice from Banfield That Pet Hospital I told you about ... said that my bank draft hadn't gone through and I needed to get it fixed to stay in "good standing."

Yikes! I am all over that because this is what $300 some dollars covers in a year:

* Unlimited FREE office calls and physical exams
* 2 comprehensive physical exams per year (which includes lab tests and analysis). This is where they detected that Velvet has Lyme Disease.
* Savings of 50% off the regular price for the services provided
* Discounts on ALL hospital services not covered by the Wellness Plans. (Soon she will be in for a long overdue dental cleaning.)

I don't know what your plan is for your pets health care. Mine used to be the basic, knee jerk reaction i.e. keeping up sort of with vaccinations and running to the Vet for emergencies. (Twice last year because of wasp stings - paid $100 per visit just for that.) If this is you I recommend you check them out and get on a plan. You'll save LOTS of money AND worry.

I was just reading about how Jann Arden recorded a special version of her song "Saved" to raise money for the ASPCA so I checked out the lyrics. Your turn ...

Lived a good life

Lived a sweet live

Oh, I've had the sun on my face

I had fallen to my knees and been amazed

I have walked beneath the brilliance of a perfect sky

Oh I am Saved

Saved

Lived a good life

Lived a sweet life

Oh I have a beautiful friend

I am breathless from the mercy of a smile

I am standing on the brink of the most perfect love

Oh I am Saved

Saved

I am Saved

I believe I am not going to be like I was

I have changed

I am Saved

I have bitten off the pieces that I did not want

I have torn them into tiny bits of rain

Oh the sun has dried those memories

like I knew it would

Oh I am Saved

I am Saved

I am Saved

Saved

Saved

I am Saved

Oh I am Saved

I have bitten off the pieces that I did not want

I have bitten off the pieces that I did not want

Yes, I have bitten off the pieces that I did not want

Oh, I am Oh I am Saved

I am Saved

Fun in the Summer Sun: Health Tips from Banfield, The Pet Hospital.

1. Make sure your pet doesn't get overexerted. Exercise is important BUT don't over heat your pet. Walk in the shade when possible, walk at a gentle pace and take a break under a shady tree if you notice excessive panting, drooling, weakness or brick red gums.

2. Provide plenty of water. Keep that water bowl full in fact you may want to put down an extra bowl and leave nothing to chance.

3. Sun lotion is good for you ... and don't forget your Pets. Pets get sunburned too! (I didn't know that.) Talk to your vet or groomer about how short to cut their fur in the summer.

4. Bring your Pet inside. When the heat goes up you need to bring your pet in ... Dark pets can overheat quickly as their coats absorb the sun's rays. Pugs and bulldogs have a hard time staying cool because they can pant efficiently; Overweight pets are also more prone to overheating. Unsure what to do? Err on the safe, vs. sorry side and invite them in ...

5. Watch out for heatstroke! This is a medical emergency. Signs are: exaggerated panting; brick red gums; unresponsive to commands and surroundings; staring/anxious expression; high fever; rapid heartbeat; vomiting; collapse; warm/dry skin.

6. NEVER leave your Pet in your automobile. On an 83-degree day the temp inside your car can reach 102 degrees in ONLY 10 minutes and 120 degrees in 30 minutes. Leave your Pet home.

7. If it is too hot for you to sit in the bed of your truck it is TOO hot for your Pet. Leave 'em home where it is cooler, where there is water and comfort. Don't leave your Pet in a situation where you wouldn't put yourself or someone you Loved.

So, here's the plan. Michael and I will pick him up tomorrow afternoon then go home and immediately take a long walk with Velvet and Jacky.

Why? Because that is what The Dog Whisperer would do to form a happy and balanced pack.

Thanks for the tip Caesar! Keep 'em coming 'cause I got a lot of learning to do ...

Is is arthritis or is it Lyme Disease? How would you know?

I just took my baby dog, Velvet, in for an exam at Banfield Pet Hospital.

I mention Banfield by name because I am so grateful to them. They offer an excellent health plan that includes a complete physical exam. I never would have been able to afford this exam at a regular vet office and without it would never have uncovered Velvet's problem.

I think she was infected a year and a half ago. She had an "attack" where she could not get up. I gathered my neighbors to help me carry her on a litter down the stairs.

The vet told me it was arthritis. There was no mention of Lyme disease or suggestion I should test for it. I assumed there wasn't anything I could do about it - she never had an attack like that again - and we just continued on ...

Well - that is water under the bridge. Can't change the past but at least now we are on the right track for her present and future. I will do all that I can to help Velvet rebuild her joints and feel good 'cause we got a lot of living to do ...

BTW Banfield is nation-wide. So - when we drive out to San Diego this fall I am not leaving my vet behind -- they will be there waiting for us if need be.

Separation Anxiety. My poodle Angel used to go NUTS whenever she was left alone. Do you know what I am talking about?

She ruined curtains, chewed up my wicker couch, trampled flowers, raided trash cans and barked incessantly. I had no clue as to what I could do to relieve her anxiety so we lived with this to 15 years.

You don't have to. The Humane Society website has excellent information on how to overcome the separation blues. Click here!

It has been about 3 months? since I starting walking dogs at my SPCA and I have one thing to say.

These dogs are in great hands and surrounded by big hearts. They are so loved!

Honestly, when I started this volunteer work I didn't know if it would be a good idea. I worried that I would feel too sad and sorry for the dogs. I felt I might find myself overwhelmed emotionally wanting to adopt each and everyone.

Instead I feel good about my service. Every week I hear about a friend or two or three that found a great home. Every week I see shy dogs becoming more confident and high strung dogs calming down a notch or two. And, every week I fall in love with someone new ...

I love Wednesdays - meeting potential parents - catching up with the staff - smelling puppy breath and rubbing a tummy or two. I walk for miles and come home tired, relaxed and happy.

Are you "on the fence" about volunteering at your shelter? Just do it ... you will be so glad you did.

We believe our system will revolutionize the way America gives, one purchase at a time."
-Kevin DiQuattro , co- founder, GiveBackAmerica.org

Example:

Purchase a TV from Target.com:
Old: click on www.target.com -- purchase a TV for $1,000 -- Charity receives $0

New: click on www.GiveBackAmerica.org click on your charity/organization
click on www.target.com banner -- purchase the same TV for $1,000 -- charity receives $30-$50

I will be trying this out. Big thanks to Kevin for bringing this opportunity to our attention. - Viveca

Where this all began ... with my brother and his camera and dog beach.
You gotta give his blog a visit at http://www.RichStonePhoto.com

The Dog Beach Photo's are for an upcoming book to be released in the fall of 2007.

The majority of the dog photo's were taken at the world’s original 'Dog Beach' in Ocean Beach, California. The locals of Ocean Beach are very proud of their Dog Beach and take great exception when other communities claim that THEIR beach was the first to be soiled by man’s favorite pal.

Many other photo’s were taken at Dusty Rhodes Park, a.k.a., 'Look where you walk' Park. Both are wonderful places to run or walk your dog. Actually, the dogs run. Dog owners walk. Carefully.

Walk off the LBS and pack on the TLC

That's what I've been doing for the past couple months as a volunteer dog walker at my SPCA. In fact, I've walked off about 8 lbs since I started walking this pack of love every Wednesday afternoon! Can't tell you how much TLC I've packed on ...

Do you have an hour or two available some morning or afternoon during the week? Click here to locate your local shelter

BTW - wonder how many lbs we could all walk off together? Want to explore this idea? Drop me a note at: Viveca@GetReadyForLove.com

According to Sarah Wilson, coauthor of "My Smart Puppy," our "non-verbal" communication has a lot to say ...

Your Dog: Pees on every bush.
You're telling him: "I live to serve."

Your Dog: Constantly entangles you in his leash.
You're telling him: "I'll keep adjusting if you'll keep loving me."

Your Dog: Humps everything in sight.
You're telling him: "If I pretend not to notice problems, may no one else will either."

I am trying to relate this to my perfect dog Velvet. Let's see ...

Velvet: Counter surfs and digs into my trash can whenever she is left alone too long with it.
I'm telling her: "My house is really your house. Thanks for letting me live here with you."

Your turn ... What is your dog telling you? Add to the comments and share with the rest of us!

Woke up yesterday and that was the first thought on my mind ... Every dog deserves a home.

Can you bring a pup home to be your "one and only" OR can you add a pal to your pack?

After I move next month we will be bringing home 4 new paws ... Velvet will have a little brother or sister!

Back walking my pack today. Kept my focus on breathing, leading and loving.

Fell in love with a little beagle named Henry. Then there was Luke and Boska and Tater and Sassy and ... hey - would you like to visit my home away from home and meet my pals? Click here

Meant to post last Wed after my walk BUT I didn't ... opps.

It went great. I focused on breathing and feeling like a calm, confident pack leader.

My goal was to be able to go in and out of the kennel without stirring everyone up. Normally the pups go a little wild whenever a dog enters or leaves - they just get excited.

I noticed the calmer and happier I felt ... so was the pack.

Aside from that I spent hours thinking about fund-raising ideas ...

Had a great time walking the pups on Wednesday. There were 3 of us this time so I had time to rub ears and bellies and sweet talk vs just rush.

I also worked with Cesar's suggestion of "checking in" with myself frequently. I would catch myself feeling tense or frustrated or tired - then pause and take a couple deep breaths - reconnect and recharge.

His tip helped me stay grounded - I feel like I did a much better job meeting their needs this week AND I enjoyed it more. Win - Win - Win!

Who adopted who?

1. Trooper. My husband Dave helped to rescue a dog likely thrown out of a car on Interstate 78 in New Jersey. Dubbed "Trooper", the dog spent months recovering from two broken front legs, repaired through complex surgery involving plates and pins to repair the fractures. Dave and I, along with the co-rescuer, agreed to split the $3000+ bill, but after two articles in local newspapers spurred generous donations, Dave and I only paid $500. The community's unexpected generosity resulted in excess donations, which went to the no-kill shelter where Trooper convalesced.

An injured 50 pound German Shepard/Chow mix with some issues stemming from previous mistreatment, Trooper was not easy to place into a new home. He occasionally would growl and snap when scared. On the other hand, he was house-trained. An energetic 6 1/2 year old, he loved taking walks and being pet.

After two months, Trooper was adopted, but the adoption didn't stick -- the couple returned him to the shelter after two weeks. As it turned out, this was their first dog, and they had bitten off more than they could chew.

His return coincided with 10 straight days of rain. . With 40 dogs to walk and short of staff, the shelter volunteers weren't able to consistently wrap Trooper's cast with plastic before his walks.Trooper's cast repeatedly soaked through and his recovery was at risk. So, Dave and we took Trooper home for "a couple of days", where we could better look after his leg. That was in October of 2005. Our other dog residents, Angel and Zoe, grew to accept him. With love, obedience training, lots of exercise and treats, Trooper has become a wonderful and easy to love companion.

2. Shadow. Shadow joined the pack in April 2006 when she was about one year old. My husband Dave rescued the black Australian Shepard mix from Newark, where she'd been on the streets for a good part of the winter. (He used a raccoon trap -- she had been fearfully eluding would-be rescuers for weeks.) We fostered her for a week while finding her a "forever" home. A young, attractive and timid dog with big brown eyes, she was easy to place. Unfortunately for the adopters, "forever" lasted only two days. She got out and turned up on our doorstep the next morning.

We don't know how Shadow found her way back to our home, but since she picked us, we adopted her. It's a Lassie-come-home story.

Shadow was very skittish at first, but she has become very cuddly and loving with Dave and me and her circle of trusted dog walkers. And her true temperament has emerged: not content with last place in pack order, she asserts herself with our other three dogs.

Thank you Gail for sharing your love story with us. Love works miracles ...

I tape, then watch The Dog Whisperer most days during my lunch break. Today I saw the transformations of Penny, Gym dog and the car shy Mastiff -- and their humans.

What I love about Cesar is how respectful and loving he is not only with all the dogs (which I understand) but also with their owners (which I sometimes find difficult to understand.)

Like one of the trainees said he is a "human whisperer" as well.

Walking Clubs + Dogs that need to be walked = Win*Win*Win!

I had an ah ha! last night while trolling the Internet in search of a walking buddy. Why not connect walking clubs with dog shelters? Both need walking - both are looking for companionship ...

We could combine efforts and walk off the pounds while piling on the love!

Did my first 2 1/2 hour dog walking session today. I am pooped! My goodness ...

I gave them my best - walked 20+ dogs - some of which were over powering. I am not a small or weak woman and at times I was holding on for their dear life.

I need help! Contacting the Dog Whisperer tomorrow for bottom line help. Could he donate some of his special collars? If it is hard for me to walk them how is someone going to take them home to their kids?

Read somewhere that the majority of dogs in shelters are between the ages of 1-3 and they are there because their owners couldn't or wouldn't handle this kind of behavior.

They are so lovable - I will do anything possible to help them get the best homes possible - FAST.
Dogs sniffing is like humans shaking hands.

When a new dog (or human) enters a pack's territory it is polite for them to remain still while everybody in the back comes up and cops a sniff. Standing still and calm allows for easier acceptance by the pack while running away is a sign of fear and anti-social behavior.

So - take it like a man, woman or dog. Or, be dogged until you do. You choose!

Leo is their first dog and I am so happy for everyone!

Macrina got a dog! Macrina got a dog! John went to the pound today and brought home the cutest little black and white Shiatsu. I am so excited! Velvet really should get some credit. She paved the wave by being an ambassador of Love.

Here's Velvet. ASAP I'll post a photo of the new happy pack. Come back soon!

I am almost done with my training at the SPCA in Fredericksburg. I love it! Will be going in on Wednesday afternoons to walk the dogs for a couple of hours. All the years dogs have loved and looked after me - feels good to be giving back.
If I would add a caption to this picture it would say ...
I'll watch your back. Will you please watch mine?

What A Dog Loves ... Is for us to Love Again

Just came across this article and want to pass it on - How To Cope with Losing A Pet .

One of its suggestions really came home to me:

While emotionally you may not be prepared to welcome another pet into your home right away, consider volunteering at a local animal shelter. Helping to care for a homeless pet, a pet in desperate need of a caring human, may help with your grieving.

I Love that. Dogs are all about Love & giving, giving, giving. This is a fine way to give back in their memory, receive comfort and some of that special kind of lovin.' Who knows who we might end up bringing home for supper ...

P.S. I start my volunteer work next Saturday. So excited! Will be walking dogs one afternoon a week during the work week. They really need more help during the week - could you slip away for a couple of hours too?

5 Money Saving Tips for you & your pooch!

1. Brush your pup’s teeth regularly and reduce the number of vet dental cleaning visits which average around $200. Best way? Use sterile gauze bandages. Just wrap one around your index finger and gently massage the teeth and gums. Also feed them treats like greenies, carrots and dry bones designed to reduce plaque and tartar.

2. Clip their toenails yourself. You can do it! Ask the vet to show you how then be patient with yourself and your pup. (I had to clip one nail a day for months before my dog Velvet would relax enough to allow me to clip all her nails. This was worth the effort! Now neither of us is stressed when it's manicure time and there is a lot less clicking going on ...

3. Regularly brush your pup's coat. This reduces grooming costs and eliminates unnecessary stress and discomfort. (A pup's beauty parlor isn't as fun as ours!)

4. Discuss vaccinations with your vet to prevent over vaccinations.

5. Shop for "best pricing" on medications on-line and offline. You will be surprised at how prices vary ...
